Bruneian Students in Western Australia at "Harmony in Diversity Carnival"

by Jacky Teo

On 23rd of March 2006, Bruneian Students Association in Western Australia (BSAWA) has joined with other international students clubs and societies to celebrate “Harmony in Diversity Carnival” at Curtin University in conjunction with Harmony Week. Harmony Week culminates on 21 March the International Day for the Elimination of Racial discrimination which marks the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre in 1960.

On 21 March 1960, police in the township of Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire on a peaceful protest against the apartheid regime’s ‘pass laws’, killing 69 people.
The United Nations (UN) commemorates the Sharpeville massacre with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

“Harmony in Diversity Carnival” was organised by International Students Committee (ISC), Curtin University of Technology with more than 200 students and about 20 stalls present on that day. There were also stall set up by the Middle Eastern, Jewish, Singaporeans, Malaysians and Australians students. The objective of the events was to provide an opportunity for the international community to reflect on progress made towards eliminating racism and to continue to oppose discrimination in all its forms.

Jacky Teo, President of BSAWA said “In time of war and chaos around the world, we should look back at our past mistake to reflex our future and learn to respect other religions, races and nationality”. It was also a great honour for the BSAWA to exhibit some of the Brunei local foods to the other international and local students at Curtin University. To know more about BSAWA, visit
